High-Value Nutrition National Science Challenge

The High-Value Nutrition National Science Challenge Scholarship of $5,000 will be awarded to the student who presents the best presentation which identifies the role that science, technology, engineering or mathematics may play in developing high-value foods in New Zealand with validated health benefits that consumers choose to stay healthy and well.

Ministry of Health

The Ministry of Health Gold Scholarship $5,000 is awarded to the student who presents the most innovative and creative scientific, technological and/or engineering based solution which addresses issues at the core of the National Science Challenge “Healthier Lives”

Federated Farmers of NZ (supported by South Pacific Sera Ltd)

The Federated Farmers Gold Scholarship valued at $5,000 is awarded to the student who presents the best and most creative science and technology based solution(s) to deliver outcomes which ensure New Zealand maintains a profitable and viable primary production sector while improving the management of land and water quality for future generations

Ministry of Education

The Ministry of Education Gold Scholarship valued at $5,000 will be awarded for the best STEM presentation by a Maori secondary school student

The Ministry of Education Gold Scholarship valued at $5,000 will be awarded for the best STEM presentation by a Pasifika secondary school student

Ministry for Primary Industries

The Ministry for Primary Industries Gold Scholarship is valued at $5,000. It will be awarded to the secondary or undergraduate tertiary student who delivers the most innovative and creative STEM solution which demonstrates the values of the Ministry for Primary Industries.

Ministry of Social Development

The Ministry of Social Development Gold Scholarship valued at $5,000 will be awarded to the student whose presentation which, through its understanding of the capacity of science, technology and mathematics to generate critical information for positive social change in an innovative way, demonstrates affinity with the National Science Challenge of “Improving the potential of young New Zealanders to have healthy and successful lives” and the MSD Mission Statement “Helping New Zealanders to help themselves to be safe, strong and independent.”

NIWA

Up to two NIWA Gold Scholarships valued at $5,000 each will be awarded to the students who present the best presentation related to climate, freshwater or marine science.


Internships

Department of Conservation

Up to two DOC Gold Internships to the value of $5,000 will be awarded to applicants who present “the best presentation which identifies the role that science, technology, engineering or mathematics may play in preservation of New Zealand’s endangered heritage species”.

BECA

Up to two BECA Gold Internships will be awarded to applicants who have completed at least two years at university as under-graduates, and who clearly provide a creative and innovative engineering solution to address issues of economic, societal and environmental value for New Zealand. The internship period would be between November and February during the university holiday period. Internships will be based in the cities of Beca’s main offices such as Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Tauranga, Hamilton and New Plymouth and provide remuneration, however not travel and accommodation costs.

MacDiarmid Institute

Up to two MacDiarmid Institute paid Internships in MacDiarmid Institute labs will be awarded to under-graduate tertiary science students, who creatively explain to a general audience the chemistry or physics behind materials science-based technologies for sustainability and climate change mitigation. Examples might include (but are not limited to) new materials to enable renewable energy generation and storage, materials for energy efficiency, materials to remove CO2, or drawing from traditional Māori and Pasifika knowledge for materials sustainability.

The internship(s) would take place sometime between November and February during the university summer holiday period. Internships will be based in the cities where there are MacDiarmid Institute labs, i.e. Auckland, Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. The Internships are paid but do not cover travel and accommodation.
